New spam/not spam retraining method

April 21st, 2010

We added a new option for retraining spam or not spam messages. Simply dragging them into the Spam folder or out of the Spam folder will take care of the error and ensure it won’t happen again in the future.

IMAP search speed upgrade

March 22nd, 2010

Along with the yesterday’s Webmail update we also installed a module to speed up search times in IMAP. This new feature will index the messages in your Inbox – the first search might be a bit slower – and offer blazing fast search results afterwards.

There are no changes required for the customers, since the webmail software or desktop client will take advantage of this new feature automatically.

Webmail Update

March 21st, 2010

We just finished updating our Atmail webmail to the latest version 6.1.6. The update was smooth and there was no downtime.

This new version fixes a number of bugs and adds Syncing of Shared/Global Calendars and Address books through Websync in Outlook.

Webmail Branding with SSL

February 11th, 2010

We added a new feature to Webmail in order to allow customers take advantage of SSL connectivity and maintain their custom logo, name and links.

You can now access SSL branded Webmail through this link:

https://webmail.emailarray.com/webmail/?domain=yourdomain.com

You can also use your own URL with https in front but that will throw an error since the certificate is for webmail.emailarray.com

Alternatively, customers can also contact us and we can install a custom SSL certificate for your domain.

New Webmail available

February 10th, 2010

We have been using a modified Atmail software as our main Webmail interface for quite some time and we were due for an Update. Even though their new version 6.0 came out last year we felt we needed to give the Atmail team some time to work out the initial bugs that come with any new major release.

This new version has a fresh new look, is easier to use and fixes many of the previous versions’ shortcomings. It supports Shared Address Books, Shared Calendars and it has Threads Support. Furthermore, you can now access your Calendars through CalDav and import it into Thunderbird, Outlook, iPhone, etc.

Feel free to report any bugs you encounter with the new version and we will make sure to correct them.

The access URL’s stay the same for all our customers and the specific branding works just like before. The generic URL for the Webmail is: http://webmail.emailarray.com

When using your own domain name, it usually accesses the non-SSL version unless you have a custom SSL certificate with us. You can access the SSL version by going to the generic page and typing in your domain manually.

Here are a few screenshots of the new interface. You can also view them live by going to our main website and clicking on the demo Webmail button.

What should the price be for an e-mail account ?

November 21st, 2008

E-mail is often overlooked by a company until it either stops working or until they are overrun by Spam and Virus messages. Only then do they realize how important e-mail really is and how dependent they are on it.

Most small companies purchase e-mail hosting along with their web hosting package. Hot deals on the Internet offer very attractive terms: full website hosting, 500 POP3 accounts, spam/virus filtering for 2$ per month. These are obvious cases of overselling and in my experience the hosts can never honor those promises.

Before starting PolarisMail I used to work as a consultant on e-mail servers and I’ve seen many such web-hosts and their setup. It usually consists of a single server running Plesk or cPanel which gives them a complete solution. The e-mail server is either Qmail or Postfix and the Spam protection software is SpamAssassin. This setup is pretty decent and can handle a few hundred users without problems but it becomes totally inoperable at higher volumes.

SpamAssassin itself, being written in Perl is the main factor in slowing things down and the overall lack of transparency makes things even worse.

The main problem however is that the idea of a complete solution gives the owner the impression that he can do e-mail hosting without knowing too much about it – and this is no longer the case. I have seen many cases of web-hosting customers sending spam messages either knowingly or not and thus blacklisting the entire server IP. Tracking down such abusers can be quite hard, assuming the owner knows how to do it.

For anyone serious about e-mail, it is obvious they either need an in-house solution or outsource to a professional e-mail host. For e-mail continuity you need a solid data center equipped with backup UPS’s, diesel generators and multiple links to the Internet. A dedicated e-mail provider should be able to offer a better quality service at a lower price than an in-house solution. The real question is what should that price be ?

At PolarisMail we feel that a fully featured account that offers 1GB of storage should not cost more than 1$ per month. Other providers offer more than 1GB but in our experience, very few business users require that much storage space. For them it is much more important to have a reliable service, accurate spam filter and good technical support.
